Total price for ALL Travellers:
1. Day - Arrival
After your arrival in Mexico City you will be expected by an employee who will take you to your hotel in the center of the metropolis. Depending on the traffic you may reckon a transfer time of 20-40 minutes.
2. Day – Citytour with a bike
Today you experience the stunning Mexican capital in a very special way. For the last few years, dozens of central streets, among them the famous boulevard Paseo de Reforma, have been closed to motor traffic. You cycle across the main square "Zocalo" to the Cathedral and the Presidential Palace and from there to Chapultepec Park with the Museum of Anthorpology (the visit is optional). Enjoy the afternoon with a walk through the Alameda park and, finally, with a visit in a cozy café bar.
3. Day – Teotihuacan
The pyramids of Teotihuacan are located approximately 60 km northeast of Mexico City and are an impressive cultural heritage of Mexico. The city was founded more than 2000 years ago. You can visit the sun and the moon Pyramid and admire the Quetzalpapalotl Palace. After the common (a little late) lunch (not included in price) in one of the typical bars, you go to the Basilica of Guadalupe. The temple of the "brown Madonna", which is celebrated on the 12th of December by millions of Mexicans, and it is the largest sanctuary in the world.
4. Day – Nationalpark Popocatépetl (300 HM, 10 km)
Today you leave the Megapolis a little earlier and drive into the Popocatéptl National Park up to almost 4000 meters above sea level. (Since Mexico City lies in an altitude of 2,200 meters, you are probably already well acclimatized to the altitude.) From the high plateau you walk in the direction of Iztaccihuatl, the proud 5000 m high volcano opposite the Popocatépetl. At a picnic, you enjoy the gorgeous view of one of the most beautiful mountain scenarios of Mexico. After a short, relaxing yoga unit your journey takes you to Puebla with its picturesque colonial center. In the evening you should definitely try the local specialty Mole - a sauce based on Chili and Cacao that is served with chicken.
5. Day – Puebla, Oaxaca
After breakfast you walk through the center of Puebla. From the cathedral you stroll down the "sweet street" to the art district. Later on, you will drive through one of the tour's most beautiful landscapes: Through the Sierra Norte the journey leads you to Oaxaca.
6. Day – Ixtepeji, Sierra Norte (200 HM, 12 km)
After having enjoyed the picturesque center of Oaxaca, you drive further south into the Sierra Norte. Starting in the village Ixtepeji you take an approximately 4-hour hike. The lush vegetation makes this day one of the most colorful of your trip. After an evening campfire you sleep in the village in rustic but clean wooden "cabañas".
7. Day – Mitla, Chiapa de Corzo
The excavations of Mitla are among the most impressive of the Zapotec culture that was widely spread in the region around Oaxaca about 1500 years ago. Strengthened with one (or two) drinks of Mezcal, the local "Schnaps", you embark on the longest and sometimes twisty part of your journey. However, the magnificent scenery of the Sierra Madre compensates for the somewhat strenuous ride. In the evening you reach the nice village of Chiapa de Corzo.
8. Day – Sumidero-Canyon, San Cristóbal
After breakfast and an hour's drive you cross the dam of Chicoasen and reach the village of Osumacinta. Right there you start a lovely walk to the village of El Paraiso on the course of which you will admire a breathtaking view of the lake and enjoy the variety of fauna and flora of this region. Your way back leads you in a boat through the canyon of the Grijalma river that meanders more than 20 kilometers between 1000 meter high rock walls.
9. Day – Agua Azul, Lacandón-Dschungel
Today you will get up a bit earlier. You will leave the highlands of Chiapas and drive towards the jungle region. On the way to the Lacandon jungle, home of one of the smallest ethnic minorities of Mexico, you will have a look at the waterfalls of Agua Azul. For the next two nights you will have to give up a bit of comfort because you will sleep in a simple (but clean) cabaña in the jungle.
If you wish to do so you can camp and for a small extra charge you can get a more comfortable room with a private bathroom.
10. Day – Mayastätte Yaxchilán
After about 40 minutes drive you arrive at the Usumacinta River, which forms the natural border between Mexico and Guatemala. About half an hour up the river you reach the remote and therefore rarely visited archaeological Mayan site of Yaxchilán. While enjoying a picnic, listen to the sounds of the rainforest and let yourself be transported back to the time when the Mayas ruled large parts of Chiapas and Guatemala from here. On the way back to the Lacandon Camp you get the opportunity (optional) to visit the archaeological site of Bonampak which impresses with its extremely well-preserved frescoes.
11. Day – Rafting & Dschungel walking tour
Near the camp you start with your (category 1) rafting tour on the Lacandum river. For nearly two hours you will raft over small waterfalls enjoying the lush jungle vegetation. On your way back to the camp on foot you stop at the beautiful waterfall for a snack and a swim. In the early afternoon we return to Palenque.
12. Day – Palenque, Siho Playa
Today you will enjoy the absolute highlight of the archaeological sites: Palenque. The Mayan site was discovered in the 18th century and since then has been cleared from the lush jungle vegetation step by step. The Temple of the Inscriptions and the Palace are particularly impressive. After the visit you drive along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to Siho Playa where you stay for one night in a wonderful hotel on the beach.
13. Day – Nationalpark Celestún
We leave a bit earlier to Celestun. There we take a 1-hour boat tour through mangrove forests while watching flamingos that settle in this National park. After lunch (not included in the price) we walk partly on the beach for about 12 km to the most beautiful hotel of the tour. Whoever wants to arrive earlier and enjoy the hotel may also drive there.
14. Day – Chichén Itzá, Valladolid
A trip to Mexico without visiting Chichen Itza is difficult to imagine. We can hardly dare to deny you this highlight and it should definitely be in the programme. Or can our guide convince you that there may be other options away from the crowds? You decide ... In any case, scheduled for today is a jump into a Cenote, a limestone cave filled with fresh water of which there are a few thousands in Yucatán.
15. Tag – Cobá mit Fahrradtour, Tulum, Strand
The adventures of the last two weeks have now come to an end. You will cycle for the last time at the small but important Mayan site of Coba. Then you drive on to Tulum. This Mayan fortress proudly presents itself on a rock above the turquoise Caribbean sea and once again you will be fascinated by the Mayan sense of beauty. After the visit of Tulum we bring you to your individually selected beach hotel (for free) where you will stay for a few more days and ONLY relax! Or would you like to explore the underwater world or take surfing lessons? Just let us know your plans.
program before your trip
- How about a stop-over in New York, or one or two days longer in Mexico City before your round trip, with or without an excursion programme?
- Or have yourself pampered in a spa, two or three days long: La Buena Vibra and Misión del Sol, near Cuernavaca, offer wellness of the highest level, at affordable prices.
- Those who like nature can visit the Copper Canyon or the Monarch butterflies in Michoacan, or make a stop at a coffee Finca.
program after your trip
After this trip through Mexico in the tracks of the Aztecs and the Mayas, we recommend an extension (3 to 5 days) to relax and muse on the impressions of your journey, on one of the marvellous white beaches of the Mexican Caribbean coast.
