Here you can click on a link ´Traza Tu Ruta´, where you can find a lot of information (the website is also availabl in English). Make sure you don´t get too surprised by the ´topes´, on the roads, they are everywhere and nowwhere. Driving in Mexico means that you need to follow you instinct, not the rules you were examined for once. We are sure you will have a wonderful vacation! On the coastal road of the Riviera Maya you can reach Tulum in less than one hour. The small, but beautiful Mayan Site of Tulum is certainly - not just because of its very beautiful location - one of the most beautiful in Mexico. The fortress proudly sits on a cliff above the turquoise Caribbean Sea. The site overlooks the bay, which is a good place to go for a swim. On the rural road you get in approximately 1, 5 hour from Tulum to Valladolid.
The small district capital of Valladolid is not far from Chichen Itza, but usually there are not many tourists, and so it is a nice alternative. At the central square is the cathedral, the most important building in the historic center.
Day 3 – Rio Lagartos, Ek Balam
Drive trough the nice little town of Tizimin to the Caribbean coast (about 100 km away).
At the national park Rio Lagartos you can see a dozens of bird species that resides the whole year round there. Above all there are hundreds of flamingos to observe which are looking for food in the shallow water of the lagoon surrounded by mangrove forests. During a approximatley 2 hours boat tour you have the possibility to float in the water with a very high salt content like in the Dead Sea. The trip continues from Valladolid to Tizimin. The beautiful church at the main square is ideal for a short photo stop. The small Mayan site of Ek Balam is located about 10 km towards north of Valladolid (towards Rio Lagartos), and is an interesting side trip. The place is known for its unique angel statues, which still have a kind of mystery.
Day 4 – Izamal, Merida
It goes 40 km on the mainroad to Chichen Itza.
The central building of the Maya and Toltec site Chichen Itza is the temple of Kukulcan, with 91 steps on each of the four sides. Not less impressive is the huge ball playground, where once the rituals took place. On the front of the big central square is the Palace of the thousand columns. There are also the observatory and other sites, which date from the classic Maya times. Within 30 minutes you will arrive in Izamal.
The huge convention in the yellow colored town Izamal is one of the most impressive and most beautiful in Yucatan. The mighty fortress still represents the inquisition of the early colonial period. Here the famous missionary Fray Diego de Landa demolished hundreds of Maya Codes. On the other side of the beautifully manicured main square is also a very nice Maya excavation. From Izamal it takes about 1.5 hours to Merida.
Merida - the white city – is known for its beautiful, lively historic center. At the main square, which is called Plaza, not as usual in Mexico Zocalo, is the cathedral, the Montejo house and the government palace of the provincial government, which is decorated by paintings by Francisco Castro. The Santa Lucia Park was one of the most romantic of the city and at the boulevard of the Paseo de Montejo you can guess the wealth of the city, when in Merida were more millionaires than in Paris or New York (because of the Sisal-temperature).
Day 5 – Campeche, Puuc Route, Uxmal
From Merida it takes about one hour on the well-developed road to Uxmal and from there the Puuc region.
The caves of Loltún consist of a several kilometers long, walk-in cave system and give a fantastic insight into the underworld of the Maya. Once under the earth there was a small town where 3000 people lived. Loltún lived from pottery products which were exported far beyond the region. The visit takes about 1.5 hours and is an unforgettable experience of your journey. The Mayan site of Uxmal, which means "three times built", is the largest in the Puuc region. The excavation is dominated by the magnificent temple of the soothsayer and the nuns. In addition, the playing field, the Governor's Palace and the turtle house are other important points. Uxmal was dominant in the classical Mayan period (5th to 8th century.) in the region of northern Yucatan and was important for trade relations and networks to other Mayan sites. Enjoy the evening in a mystical world and enjoy the archaeological site of Uxmal in a sound and light cloud. You can see the approx 1.5 hours long spectacle sitting on the main staircase of the nuns' quadrant.
Day 6 – Caribbean beach
You leave the Puuc region towards Merida and from there you drive on the highway to Cancun to the Riviera Maya, where your beach hotel is located.
Our staff member expects you at 18 o'clock at the lobby of your hotel. You can give the car easily back to him.
ProgramMe after the trip
