Hiking & mountain climbing in Mexico

Hiking and mountain climbing in Mexico - "You haven't really been somewhere unless you've been there on foot", Goethe once said. Very few travellers think of Mexico as a good country for hiking and mountain climbing. However, Mexico offers many great opportunities for both hikers and climbers with its relatively easy to climb mountains.

In the central highlands (around Mexico City and Puebla) lie the Iztaccihuatl, known as "The Sleeping Woman", the Popocateptel or "the White Giant" and Mexico's highest mountain, the Pico de Orizaba (5611 m high).

The Copper Canyon in northern Mexico with its area of about 250 x 700 km (!), is a true paradise for adventurous hikers. This giant complex does not  offer hiking paths as such, but there are many routes used by the Tarahumara Indians to travel between their small distant ranches.
