What type of luggage is recommened for the bus tours?

Bulky luggage is generally not a problem when travelling by bus. Once you get into the bus your luggage will be stored below, and it will be delivered to you once you reach your destination. Many times, the hotel will be close to the bus station (this is the case in San Cristóbal)  and the best way to reach it is walking. This is why we recommend you to travel with a backpack, or at least a trolley. Mexican pavements are usually pretty uneven and walking with big suitcases can be quite uncomfortable.

What do you mean by a bus trip? How does that work? Is the guide included?

Travelling by public bus is very comfortable; we will send you your first class tickets before your departure. This is by far the cheapest way to travel in Mexico. Our organization is in charge of providing the tickets for the public bus, book hotels and the so-called shuttle services, which are one-day private tours for destinations that cannot be reached by first class busses. In addition, our competent guides will give you the best possible service. Evidently, you will need to rely a little more on your own initiative, since a guide will not be with you every leg of the tour. Such service is provided in our small group tours or our tours with a private guide. You will need to take a taxi from the bus station to the hotel and vice versa. Likewise, all visits to the main squares of every city will be on your own, and in case there are some delays in the bus times, you will need to find out by yourself where to go. On the other hand, this gives you a lot of freedom!

By doing so you will receive access to your personal travel portal, where you can enter the passengers' personal dates so we can book the flights that may be included in the offer.

When is the best time to travel to Mexico?

You can travel to Mexico throughout the whole year. As a traveller you are probably a bit worried about the rainy season spoiling the pleasure of your travel. As Europeans you may associate rain with wind, coolness, damp weather and staying inside your house. However, this is different in Mexico.

First of all, during the rainy season in Mexico it seldom rains during the day; it mainly rains during the night. The rain falls down as short, strong showers and it hardly cools down the country: it remains warm. For all these reasons, we recommend you not to plan your trip to Mexico solely on the basis of the rainy season. However, if you still do not want to travel around during the rainy season, you can best do so from November to March.

What costs should I calculate per day (food, drinks)?

Be aware that the price level in Mexico is approximately 40% lower than in Europe. In other words: food and drinks cost about half the price (excluding table wine, which is quite expensive in Mexico). A guide for personal meal expenses could be 15 to 30 Euro per person per day.  The exact amount you spend  per day depends on your drinking and eating habits.

Maya World Yucatan, January 2012

Maya World Yucatan, January 2012

Marvellous Mextrotter Yucatan tour January 2012: 2500 km of Maya sites!

I did the Mextrotter Maya World Yucatan trip at the end of January 2012. I am interested in ancient civilizations and this tour covered about 2500 km of Maya sites in Mexico. From my privileged seat in the minivan (being the only single in the group, I got offered the passenger seat in the front which allowed me more chances to ask questions to our charming guide/chauffeur Anya). All my cotravellers were German speaking, so I freshened up my high school German a lot, but alas, I did not acquire much of Spanish. We visited Tulum (where I got a highly educated English guide for me alone), Chicanna, Calakmul (a not so much visited site which features the highest Maya temple at 44m, where we saw lots of monkeys, boar, pawns and deer roaming in the forest), Palenque, Agua Azul and Mishol-ha falls, Champoton, Campeche (after having a marvellous fish dinner with our feet in the sea sand), Uxmal (near the site we visited the home of a traditional Maya family where we learned some interesting cultural aspects form contemporary Maya culture), Merida (where had a tequila party around the pool on the top floor of the hotel), Chichen Itza (the busiest site we visited), two cenotes (where we had an exotic cool dip), Valladolid (small cute town where we had our “last supper”) and National Park Rio Lagartos (where we had a mud bath covering ourselves with grey, sticky, oily mud all over: we ended up looking like the Mad Men From Borneo). At the end of the tour I had booked three extra nights at Club Akumal Caribe at Akumal, on advice of one of Mextrotter’s excellent assistants. This place was just 20m from the sea shore, and with the great coral riff at only 50m into the sea): a rather remote place for doing some snorkeling and finding many fish I would like to get into my aquarium.
In the end, I really felt boosted by the combination of the Maya cultural tour and my few days at the beach. I can really recommend this formula to everyone, of all ages and cultures.

Aztecs and Maya by bus

Thanks Mextrotter for all your help by planning our tour! We decided to make a bus tour through Mexico and we had a wonderful experience. The nice thing was that we received all the bustickets beforehand - we have travelled to quite some places now but had never had this experience. Mostly we needed to visit the local office of the agency or something to pick up the tickets. Really we were surprised by the quality of the service of the busses, they are wonderful. We especially liked the area of San Cristobal, although the trip to Palenque was a bit heavy because of all the curves...Overall we are looking back to a wonderful experience.

Bustour Aztecs & Maya, August – September 2011

Bustour Aztecs & Maya, August – September 2011

For all people that do not like to read a lot: CONCLUSION: We would go again with Mextrotter! Good organization, reliable airport transfers, good advise on route, excellent hotel selection.

Teh proposed standar route can be changed, but since we only had 2 weeks holiday, we decided to go for the standard route. On our trip from  Mexico City to Playa del Carmen we got to see a Mexico with a diversity fo culture and nature, and wonderful ethnical tribes. During the whole bustour we felt secure and comfortable. On the bigger busterminals one can see big tablets with the tarifs of the taxi´s, so you get very well orientated. Our personal highlights were the excursion tot eh Indian villages with home made tortillas from the Tzotzil, Teotihuacán and Celestun. The water in Agua Azul had, as expected in the rain season, brown water. Another highlight was the hotel Villas Kin Ha in the jungle, with its small oberservation tower and restaurant in built around a tree. We decided to pay the tour afterward, but since everything was organized so well, this would not have been necessary. A special thanks to Patrick Junkers for his phone-tips and Anja Richter for her reliable airport transfer. This all made it perfect!
