Detailed information on driving behaviour in Mexico will be given to you in the travel documents once you book your trip with us. Generally speaking, Mexican roads are in good condition, especially the toll roads.

The document below gives you some useful tips on driving through Mexico.

Driving the Mexican way

Programme after the trip

After your round trip by rental car we recommend a prolongation of your vacation (from 3 to 5 days) at one of the countless white sand beaches of the Caribbean in order to relax and digest the impressions of your journey.

Here you find an overview of beach hotels according to category:

  • MAIN THING: AFFORDABLE > show
  • CABAÑAHOTELS (small resorts in bungalow style) > show
  • ALL-INCLUSIVE-RESORTS > show

You may also want to visit Cancun and spend one or two days on the beach before the beginning of your trip.

Is driving around in Mexico safe enough? How are the roads in Mexico?

Mexico is a safe country to travel around by rental car. The roads are better (and getting better every time) than one could imagine and Mexicans drive with caution, although they do it not so much because they follow the rules but because they are tactful. A 4x4 vehicle is not needed, but you do need to look out for any unforeseen speedbumps (topes) to avoid any unexpected bumps at high speed. Our logisitc information will be provided in the travel documents; taking into consideration the estimated travel times will help you prepare mentally for each leg of the route.

Will I get street maps? What are the best/safest places to park?

You will receive a detailed street map of Mexico. You can also rent a GPS (in English or German). All our partner hotels have their own parking space or a special agreement with a parking space close by. At the archeological sites, museums and other sights you should always make sure to leave the car in a parking lot  or a parking space with some security (you will normally have to pay a small fee). We strongly advise you not to park in the streets of any city, since  parking rules are not easy to understand and differ from state to state. Parking lots (Estacionamiento Público) are good options to park your car safely.

Do I need the international driver's license in Mexico?
No. You can easily drive the rented car with the driver's license from your country.

Skeptical about internet bookings?

Only with Mextrotter: Travel first, pay afterwards!  By paying only 4% extra you enjoy your trip first and pay within 7 days after you go back home.

How do I book with Mextrotter?

After choosing your desired trip(s) on our website you will receive a non-binding offer which you can book simply by reply e-mail. Please include the reference number (= tourcode) in your mail. By doing so you will receive access to your personal travel portal, where you can enter the passengers' personal dates so we can book the flights that may be included in the offer.

For further information consider our  Booking Memo Sheet.

When is the best time to travel to Mexico?

You can travel to Mexico throughout the whole year. As a traveller you are probably a bit worried about the rainy season spoiling the pleasure of your travel. As Europeans you may associate rain with wind, coolness, damp weather and staying inside your house. However, this is different in Mexico.

First of all, during the rainy season in Mexico it seldom rains during the day; it mainly rains during the night. The rain falls down as short, strong showers and it hardly cools down the country: it remains warm. For all these reasons, we recommend you not to plan your trip to Mexico solely on the basis of the rainy season. However, if you still do not want to travel around during the rainy season, you can best do so from November to March.

What costs should I calculate per day (food, drinks)?

Be aware that the price level in Mexico is approximately 40% lower than in Europe. In other words: food and drinks cost about half the price (excluding table wine, which is quite expensive in Mexico). A guide for personal meal expenses could be 15 to 30 Euro per person per day.  The exact amount you spend  per day depends on your drinking and eating habits.

Rental car tour Yucatan October 2011

Rental car tour Yucatan October 2011

We travelled in September and October 2011 3 weeks in Mexico and the surrounding areas. After landing in Cancun we took a car from Mextrotter so we could experience the country by our own - it worked out to be wondeful. We came across Mextrotter several times, since we made side trips to the neighbooring countries Gautemala and Belize. No other companies agreed to cross the boarder with the car (in Guatemala you are not allowed to enter with tthe rental car). The roads in Yucatan are generally in good condition, the only thing to get used to are the speed bumps at unexpected moments. We have not felt or seen anything relating to the high crime rate, actually, we were treated all the time very nicely and we would love to go back to Mexico!

Maya World Yucatan, January 2012

Maya World Yucatan, January 2012

Marvellous Mextrotter Yucatan tour January 2012: 2500 km of Maya sites!

I did the Mextrotter Maya World Yucatan trip at the end of January 2012. I am interested in ancient civilizations and this tour covered about 2500 km of Maya sites in Mexico. From my privileged seat in the minivan (being the only single in the group, I got offered the passenger seat in the front which allowed me more chances to ask questions to our charming guide/chauffeur Anya). All my cotravellers were German speaking, so I freshened up my high school German a lot, but alas, I did not acquire much of Spanish. We visited Tulum (where I got a highly educated English guide for me alone), Chicanna, Calakmul (a not so much visited site which features the highest Maya temple at 44m, where we saw lots of monkeys, boar, pawns and deer roaming in the forest), Palenque, Agua Azul and Mishol-ha falls, Champoton, Campeche (after having a marvellous fish dinner with our feet in the sea sand), Uxmal (near the site we visited the home of a traditional Maya family where we learned some interesting cultural aspects form contemporary Maya culture), Merida (where had a tequila party around the pool on the top floor of the hotel), Chichen Itza (the busiest site we visited), two cenotes (where we had an exotic cool dip), Valladolid (small cute town where we had our “last supper”) and National Park Rio Lagartos (where we had a mud bath covering ourselves with grey, sticky, oily mud all over: we ended up looking like the Mad Men From Borneo). At the end of the tour I had booked three extra nights at Club Akumal Caribe at Akumal, on advice of one of Mextrotter’s excellent assistants. This place was just 20m from the sea shore, and with the great coral riff at only 50m into the sea): a rather remote place for doing some snorkeling and finding many fish I would like to get into my aquarium.
In the end, I really felt boosted by the combination of the Maya cultural tour and my few days at the beach. I can really recommend this formula to everyone, of all ages and cultures.

Rental car tour Mexico

I would like to just make a short comment on the tour I just made with Mextrotter. We rented a car with them and booked all hotels ourselves over the internet. We had a wonderful time and all was working out perfectly. The guy that handed over the rental car was very cute; he tried so hard to speak English! The car was in perfect conditions and during the 1100 miles we drove we didn´t have any problems with it at all. Thanks Mextrotter for the service!
